A Smith's Guide to Crafting Weaponry

Since time began the people roaming this realm have needed smith's to craft their tools, weapons, armor, and all the things they need in day to day life. The best way to begin the career of smithing is to apprentice to an already experienced master smith that knows his work. This is not always available however. So, to help those smiths trying to learn on their own, I have written this short guide to crafting weaponry. This will only tell most of the basics, and any advanced information you will probably have to seek out elsewhere.

First let's examine the types of weapons that exist. The first, and most common, are the bladed weapons. These include everything from the huge bladed sword, like a broadsword or falchion, to the small dirk, such as a knife or pavade. This will probably be the most common type you encounter. The next type to discuss are the impact weapons. These are weapons such as hammer's, maces, clubs, etc. The smith will usually need some knowledge of wood working to craft these.

Third on our list are axes. These are not just weapons. A wood cutter may often come to you to get a new axe for chopping down trees. But of course, you will also often have the heavily built dwarven warrior request you to make an executioner's axe. It is a safe bet he will have a grin on his face when he requests this.

For now let us discuss Bladed weapons. One basic rule of weaponry that a weapon that looks like a baselard to you, will look like a bodkin to someone else. So the first thing to understand is the basic categories of weapons to craft. By adjusting the size you craft this weapon at, you will adjust what the weapon looks like to different people. Following are the basic type to craft, and then the diffent types you could end up with by varying the size.
